Broadcast Yourself

One of the graphic designer's primary tools is the Macintosh computer. As such, you need to know how to use it, how to maintain it, and how to troubleshoot problems when they occur. We're not trying to become full-fledged technicians. We need to know how to solve problems and perform minor upgrades on the Mac.

Project Highlights

  • This project is worth 10% of your final grade.
  • You will research a specific piece of technology and produce a three minute video to explain its usefulness and features. The video will be posted on YouTube.

Youtube You must make your segment informative, thorough, creative and concise. The idea is to convey the fundamental information about your topic concisely. Everyone will post their segments to a single common account on YouTube. These will be available to everyone to study. We'll play them in class when they are done.

Create

You will be given a technology-related topic to research. It is up to you and your classmates to find out what the topic is. You need to have a firm understanding of how the technology plays a part in the design studio. Find out which characteristics are sought after when shopping for one of these. What are the features which need to be known when buying this device?

Once you have a grasp of the essentials, you need to capture video which will explain this to others. You can use symbolism. For instance, show traffic on a highway to symbilize throughput inside a computer. You are free to depict your concept however you wish; as long as the ideas and the footage are your own.

Edit

iMovie 8 You have one week to gather footage. Once you have it all, you'll work in iMovie (at school or on your own Mac) to produce your segment. You can consult the applications help files to get started. Part of this assignment is to be able to learn new software. iMovie is a good place to start, since it is so intuitive. Here's a really helpful page to get you started.

We want to keep our segments short and informative. The message needs to be focused. Keep things moving. You'll import all your footage into iMovie. From there, you'll edit it into clips no longer than 10 seconds. You can use transitions, music, voiceovers and other effects to enhance your segments.

Post

Once you are done creating your masterpiece, we'll post them to a common YouTube account. This way all first year (and all the wired world) will have access to your works of art. Your segments will be evaluated for thoroughness, creativity and focus.

The C-P-You

  1. Data Storage
  2. Memory
  3. Processor (single & multi-core)
  4. Connecting Peripherals
  5. Internet/Intranet
  6. Scanners
  7. Printer (Laser & Ink Jet)
  8. Internet Access (including bandwidth & throughput)
  9. Displays
  10. Backup & Archive
  11. Tablet

You will be graded on...

The "informativeness" of your piece.
Like "truthiness", "informativeness" is a new word, so it's not yet in the dictionary, though you may hear it spoken on the Colbert Report. The most important factor is to communicate the fundamental characteristics of the item. Make sure that the viewer learns its salient characteristics.
Originality
This is the challenging part. None of us feel like watching you read cue cards with wikipedia entries. See
videos like this one to get a jumping off point for creativity.
Adherence to the guidelines
Keep your video short and punchy. No individual clip can be more than ten seconds in length. The whole segment needs to be limited to three minutes.
