TIMELINE

  • During class today, I will review the concepts you've document in the design brief.
  • You will gather assets for your design.
  • I will take you for a tour of the gradients palette in Illustrator.

HEADS UP!

  • Your die line stoke should be 0.5pt thick.
  • Folds should be indicated as dashed lines.

Package Design

You will design a food package in Adobe Illustrator using techniques taught in class. The goal of this assignment is to use Live Effects in Illustrator to create editable artwork.

Practical Criteria

You will devise a new product name. It must be believable and appealing. The scenario is that it's a new product from an existing food manufacturer. Dentine Breeze gum could be an example.

You'll include all the of the realistic elements from an actual package of Dentine gum to make it look as realistic as possible. You must make it your own with promotional elements on the package.

  • Make up you own food name.
  • Use existing manufacturer.
  • Show me your ideas before you start designing your package.
  • Use existing photography if necessary.

Thematic Criteria

It is imperative that you capture the spirit of the food product you have chosen. If it's targeted to young boys, it must capture their imaginations. If it's a sports drink, it must be compelling to the athlete.

I would strongly urge you to visit your local grocery store to observe what packages have in common. For example, most cereal packages targeted to children have a mascot. They use bright colours. They appeal to fun and play. Your package must blend right into its product category in the grocery store.

  • Must be original, don't just copy an existing box
  • You can use existing mascots/characters (ie: Snap, Crackle & Pop), but run it by me first.
  • Use a colour scheme, coordinate your colours

Illustrator Software Skills

Must See TV

This truly is a must-see tutorial for Live Effects. They'll be key to this assignment. This video is only a start. I strongly urge you to open a new Illustrator file to play with Live Effects.

How to get an "A"

Creative

Your design should be appropriate to the product. If your product is Dentine Breeze gum, your design should appear light and airy.

Software Skills

You should execute software skills as directed in class. The goal is to maximize editability with Live Effects as much as possible.

Your file should be built in an organized fashion. This means using named Layers. Create type as directed in class.
