Binding

This group research exercise involves using the Web or other resources to find info on a specific binding methods. You need to design a one page summary. The text needs to be edited for unity, structure and (Canadian) spelling. Your page should be designed using a grid and a thoughtful aesthetic. It can be done in InDesign. This is what will be graded. I will combine them all and re-distribute them as one PDF to the whole group. This way, you will have a guide to use for future projects.

Suggested Method

I'm giving you this assignment because your work load is probably pretty heavy right now. This exercise is meant to let you save time by co-operating and dividing up the research work.

If I were you, I would meet once with your group members. The list of groups is on the left of this page. Split up the tasks amongst yourselves.

You need to make the illustration, explain the method, describe the implications of the method, offer tips, name suppliers with links. Someone also needs to actually put all the info in an InDesign page. So assign these tasks to each person, then keep track of each other via e-mail or instant message. In the end, pass all the info to the person doing the layout.

I will pick up a "Package" of the InDesign document at next class to create a combined PDF to re-distribute to the whole class. This way, you can have a "Binding Guide" to take with you . The irony is that the guide won't be bound at all!

Please contact me if you're unsure of any thing.

Part of the exercise is to find suppliers for your particular binding method. If these suppliers have a web site, please create a hyperlink in InDesign.

  1. Thermal Binding Methods
  2. Stitched Binding Methods
  3. Perfect Binding Methods
  4. Case Binding Methods
  5. Comb, Coil, Wire Binding Methods

Illustration of this method

  • Provide a clear, close-up illustration on this method in Illustrator. Make it grayscale. You should show the book in its entirety and show the binding up close.
  • What is the structure of this type of binding? Annotate the illustration with the parts of the binding.

Explanation of the method.

  • How is it done? List and explain the steps involved.
  • Are there different solutions within this one type? If so please explain the differences.

You should describe:

  • The durability of this method.
  • When it is optimal to use.
  • Pros and cons of the method.
  • The cost, relative to other types of bindery. If you can find a specific price for your method, please do so.
  • Terminology directly related to this method of binding. This may relate to the parts of the binding or the process.
  • Is it very labour intensive compared to other methods?

Binding tips to save you time and money

  • Provide tips for the designer who wishes to use this method. Don't repeat things you've already said above. As an example, for some binding methods, you need to consider the margins in your documents more than for others. This is good info for the designer to consider.

Who's who?

  • Where can you go to have this method done?
  • Is it easy to find suppliers?
  • What kind of place will do this for you? Can you just go to "Staples" or do you need to find someone specialized?
