DELIVERABLES
These are the final deliverables. Not for next week. These will be due at the start of class on week 5.
- A printer ready PDF in readers' spreads.
- A laser (black & white) dummy on tabloid sheets. This is assembled as a book.
- A folder in my drop box named "lastname, firstname" with an InDesign package.
Nav Canada Safety Plan
This safety plan is a first stage in designing a complete publication, using advanced InDesign skills.
Project Highlights
- This project is worth 15% of your final grade.
- It is due at the start of class 4.
- You will work with the provided content to design a Safety Plan for Nav Canada.
- Design Skills:
- grid design, hierarchy, font selection, colour selection.
- InDesign Skills:
- flowing text, styling text, building tables, anchored objects, lists, page numbering and section options, master pages.
- Project Description
- You will be given the contents of the document in text format. You will have to read the content to recognize the hierarchy in the text.
- Preparation Activities:
- You will provide a design specimen as displayed in this PDF file.
- Grids:
- You will need to design a creative grid. Not simply three columns. It should have life to it—a novel twist. It still needs to be appropriately sober, considering the content. You will hand in a grid design like this.
- Hierarchy:
- You need to read the text. You will hand in a single page with text from the document which depicts the hierarchy. This is like a sample design with one of each titles in descending order.
- Font Selection:
- You will hand in a font pairing with sample text. This step can be combined with the “Hierarchy” step above.
The Specs
The Safety Plan document:
- 28 pages + cover
- Black + PMS 5405U throughout
- No bleeds
- Cover: Black + PMS 5405U single sided
More on Grids
This is a fine example of how flexible grids can be. The first image has a 32 cell grid drawn on it. All the other images are layouts based on the same grid. Proof that grids don't make for boring designs, designers do. All of these layouts are full of movement and life.
This is an example of what I would like you to bring to class next week, along with your design specimen.

On the Board
Today, we will work on the Safety Plan. We will:
- Set up a document
- Add your design to Master Pages. (including folios)
- Pour the text into the document.
- Style the text with Paragraph Styles
- Create the pull quotes as anchored objects.
