HEADS UP!

  • You may have to take a screen shot of the photo in Kuler or at Flickr. To do so, use "Shift + Command + 4". Draw a marquee around the photo. It will end up on your desktop as a PNG file.

Adobe Kuler

Adobe Kuler is one of the reasons I love Adobe. They created a whole online community based on colour for designers. We're going to explore this portal and discover its powerful and seemingly psychic powers to deliver exactly the colours you need for the job at hand.

Project Highlights

  • This project is worth 10% of your final grade.
  • You will design a letter-sized page layout based on the colour theme extracted from a photo on Kuler.
  • Hand in your layout in an InDesign Package folder at the end of class.

About Kuler

Choosing colours is sometimes a shot in the dark. With basic knowledge of colour theory, Adobe Kuler can take the guess-work out of the process. This exercise introduces you to this web application and walks you through the finer points of creating a colour theme for a page layout.

We will explore all facets of the application and how it integrates with Creative Suite.

Your Assignment

  • Get an Adobe ID to log in.
  • Delete all unused colours from the Color panel.
  • Only include the colours from the Kuler theme.
  • Use the photo as the basis for the theme of your layout
  • Use placeholder text for the layout, except for the headlines.
  • Load its colours into your Colour panel. Delete all unused colours.
  • Make a page layout with dummy text, using the colours. It can be a brochure, a magazine page or any other letter-sized page.
  • Hand in your InDesign Package folder and your ASE file.

How to get an A

Create a clean single page layout. It can be a magazine page, a brochure mock-up or any other single-page layout.

  • It must be your own layout.
  • Design it on a grid.
  • Choose your fonts wisely. Fonts have appropriate colours too.
  • Have a clear focal point and flow to your layout.
  • Good hierarchy must be achieved.
  • It must be properly built with the appropriate InDesign tools.
